Paper Arts A Thon 2008

Hope... we, the 'Dream Team' held onto hope that the 1st Paper Arts A Thon 2007 would be a success and we would be able to plan another. Our definition of success was 'Everyone would have a great time and we would raise money towards Holly and Terry Hearn's commitment to participate in 'Joints in Motion'. (Their marathon is in January 2008). The success of Paper Arts A Thon went beyond our wildest dreams. Almost $10,000. was raised and according to the survey sheets we asked everyone to fill out, it was one of the best, if not the best, event they had ever attended.

So.... we are doing it again! Paper Arts A Thon 2008 is a go!

Here are the specifics.
We are fund raising for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. We have been in touch with the Atlantic Division and they are pleased and willing to support us in this fund raising event anyway they can. We chose to raise money for CBCF for several reasons: although we know breast cancer can affect men, it is mostly known as a woman's disease; many of us have been touched by someone in our lives who have suffered or succumbed to breast cancer; it is a disease we, as women, more than likely all fear; we want to make a difference.

The registration numbers will increase. We have had so many people tell us they wished they could come so we will have 64 spots available, up 20 from last year. In order to do this we had to move to a new facility, the Nova Scotia Community College in Middleton has graciously opened there doors to us.

The event will be held the 3rd and 4th of May 2008. As Oprah says “when we know better we do better” and now we know 24 hours is just too long for everyone (although I do remember a few scrappy scrappers working diligently on pages at 6:00 am). Registration will start at 9:00 am on the 3rd of May with the event beginning at 10:00 am and we will continue on until 6:00 am Sunday, May 4th. A 20 hour event which still qualifies as a Marathon.

Each registrant will bring materials of there choice to work on throughout the 20 hour marathon. Whatever your paper hobby is, this will be a great opportunity to work on it. We will supply you with ample space to create with your friends.

We will do our best to see that everyone arrives and leaves safely, for those of you coming from New Brunswick (it wouldn't be the same without you!) we will ensure we have a plan worked out to get you here and back home safely.

We will offer some half marathon spots the same as we did last year. These will run from 10 am until 10 pm on the 3rd of May (although those who stayed on were VERY glad they did, we plan lots of Surprises! throughout the night). We also want to reaffirm our intent that everyone needs to do this safely, so if you are too tired to continue please feel free to leave at anytime.

The Dream Team provided most of the food last year, with some much appreciated help from friends! As you can imagine, feeding 64 people (last year I am sure the participants will agree they did not go away hungry) lunch, supper and snacks and a light breakfast can be a costly venture. We had tried to find a food store to help out with this but we had little success. This year we are asking (it is on your registration form) if you would be willing to bring a food item. As the event draws near and if you have answered yes to this, we will contact you with a list of items needed and give you an opportunity to choose what item would be best for you to donate. This will certainly help out with the overhead costs and eliminate a registration fee.

Which leads me to explain, to anyone new, that there is no registration fee for this event. The way we raise money for CBCF will be through Pledge Sheets which each of you will receive when you register and as you are participating in a Marathon (Paper Arts) you will canvas family and friends to make a donation to CBCF. (your pledge sheet will give specifics about tax deductions, etc). A few participants last year instead of canvassing for pledges made items and sold them to raise money or made a sizable donation in lieu of a registration fee.

At Paper Arts A Thon a couple of other fund raising events will be happening. During the 20 hour event we will have Make N Take projects available for you to do. The materials for these projects will have been donated and we ask that you make a donation to do these projects. Please note on your registration sheet a place where you can let us know if you are interested in doing these or not. This will make it easier to know how many Make N Take projects to prepare for.
We also held a fun and very successful Silent Auction filled with great items to bid on.

So.. .what you need to do...

Mark your Calendar's for Paper Arts A Thon May 3rd & 4th 2008.

Email me for your registration form, information sheet and pledge sheet.

Send the Registration form back as quickly as possible. (Remember there are only 64 spots).

Plan to have one of the best weekends ever! We, the Dream Team, have a tough task of living up to your expectations but as we stated last year, we know the bar was set high, and we will do our best to meet it and hopefully we will exceed it!

HOPE... we all need to live with HOPE that we can make a difference and we will see a cure for Breast Cancer.

BELIEVE... Believe in all possibilities and that 'We can Change the World, One Piece of Paper At a Time”.

We look forward to seeing you at Paper Arts A Thon 2008.

The Dream Team,
Bonnie, Jackie, Holly and Myleta

Final Recap

Paper Arts A Thon, by all accounts, was a huge success. The generousity and spirit will long be remembered and will carry us through until Paper Arts A Thon 2008.

The final tally of funds raised was $9673.78. Amazing!

'Thank you' to those who attended and 'Thank You' to all of you who could not attend but showed your support in so many other ways, purchasing tickets, donating and or helping serve food, donating silent auction items.

We have a full year to prepare for the 2008 Paper Arts A Thon and as we have expressed: The bar was set high at our first Paper Arts A Thon and we know we can never exceed it but we will do our VERY best to meet it!

In the meantime we are preparing for our next fundraising venture. We, Holly, Jackie, Bonnie and I had decided prior to Paper Arts A Thon that we should continue fundraising for Joints in Motion/ Arthritis Society. The decision was made for two reasons. One, we didn't want the fun for us to end, we had such a blast preparing for Paper Arts A Thon and two, we didn't know the outcome of Paper Arts A Thon and if more $$$'s would be needed. Although we exceeded our desired goal we decided to continue with fundraising as dollars are still needed for the Arthritis Society.
So... please join us for

'Kick Off to the Christmas Spirit'

When: Saturday, November 24th, 2007
Where: Nova Scotia Community College
Middleton, Nova Scotia
Time: 8:30 am to 4:00 pm

What’s happening: A day to spend with your friends, making everything imaginable to get you in the mood and prepared for Christmas! You will go away with cards, tags, gift ideas and Christmas ornaments. Lunch will be served. Cost: $30.00

Please register by contacting:
Myleta Ross orHolly Hearn

Fundraiser For the Arthritis Society/Joints in Motion
Registration cut off: November 1st,2007

At Paper Arts A Thon we explained that we wanted every penny we fundraise at 'Kick Off to the Christmas Spirit' to go to Joints in Motion and we did not want to go to individuals and businesses to ask for donations. Instead we are asking anyone that would be interested in donating their recycling to us (either the recyclables and we will turn them in or the dollars from the recyclables) and we will use these dollars to purchase the materials needed to make the Christmas projects we have planned for you. Any money left over from the recycling collected will go to Joints in Motion.
If you are interested in donating your recyclables please contact Holly or I at the above addresses.

Again, Thank you for your support in our first fundraising event and we hope you will join us in November, a reunion of sorts and a chance to (as Jaime put it) 'Change the World, one piece of Paper at a time'.

Happy Stamper,
Myleta

A Magic Carpet Ride!

This is a copy of my post to my 'Happy Stamper' Blog. A long post but a 'brief' description of 'WHAT HAPPENED' at Paper Arts A Thon. Thank you to Marianne, Dave, Charlene, Paul and Stampin' Stud who came in at meal times to help out!

If I was asked to describe our first Paper Arts A Thon, this is the best description. The 24-hour event was pure magic and everything went so smoothly it MUST have been a carpet ride.

Bonnie, Holly, Jackie and I were at the Fire Hall at 8:00 am to finish off any last minute preparations. It seemed propitious that Elaine was our first Paper Artist to arrive. None of us had met Elaine before as she had heard about the event at Michael’s. When Elaine registered back in April she was pleasantly surprised to find out Paper Arts A Thon was a fundraiser for Arthritis as she is an Arthritis sufferer and that the day of the event was the 26th May as that is her birthday.
Shortly after Elaine arrived everyone started rolling in. It was so much fun greeting old friends and meeting new ones. Everyone was thrilled with their goody bags and excited to get the day underway. After ‘teary’ speeches from Holly and I, we turned the mike over to Jackie. We knew she would lift everyone’s spirit and get us all in the mood for the PARTY! She asked that everyone stand and introduce themselves, telling where they were from and how they got to attend Paper Arts A Thon. Bonnie then got the fun ‘job’ of drawing for a few door prizes!
By now you are thinking she is going to give us every little detail and how long will this post be? I won’t do that to you. I’ll just skip ahead touching on the high points and ‘surprises’.
While everyone got down to creating their own projects and participating in the Make N Takes, Jackie and Bonnie started counting the pledge sheet totals with Terry (Holly’s husband) nearby to post the totals on the ‘Thermometer’ he had created. Terry kept saying, “Can I go post another number now?” which told us he shared in our excitement. It didn’t take us long to see where this was headed, straight to the TOP and when the girls gave me their total, I nearly passed out, I had to grab the kitchen counter for support. We were in such shock over the total they decided to count it again in case there was a mistake but no, the total from the pledge sheets was $7578.00 and the Hearn’s needed to raise $7800.
Okay, if I keep posting like this, I will have a post a mile long, so I think I will just post in point form some highlights.
-the donations for the Silent Auction table, all were fabulous but there were a couple of last minute surprises. A boat trip (glad you won Alex but I wish I had the foresight to start bidding sooner). A collector’s print of Sable Island horses that was used for a postage stamp.
-Cranky pants, I won’t forget those Cranky pants wrapped around, heads, necks, Amy wearing them and pulled up to her arm pits and Angie flinging them outside, even good natured Terry got to wear them.
-Karaoke! I warned those girls that I could not sing but they made me do it! I have now discovered there is another ‘person’ living inside me and to tell you the truth ‘she’ scares me. On May 26th as one person described it, I went from a Karaoke virgin to a Karaoke slut!
-Elaine waltzing across the floor in her ‘Beautiful Sparkly Birthday’ crown.
-Alice, how can I every forget the kindness of Alice, who put together certificates for Holly, Bonnie, Jackie and myself, along with cards that best suited us, for everyone to sign.
-Our Belly Dancer. At 2:00 am we had everyone close their eyes and we turned out the lights. When the lights came on standing before them was the most beautiful Belly Dancer you have ever seen. With beauty and grace she danced up a storm. The room was electric with energy. This recharged us for the remainder of the night. After her beautiful dance she passed out scarves and coined skirts for a few brave souls to try their hand or hips at Belly Dancing. Our sweet Holly took to this like a duck to water and wore that coined skirt for HOURS (slightly embellished here for you Sandra).
-THE PARAMEDIC! Now if you were a participant you would know that Jackie had been sending out emails to everyone and in a couple of them she mentioned ‘scent sensitivity’ as she suffers from this and although she is a single Mom still didn’t want a handsome Paramedic showing up to rescue her. Well, Terry heard about this and arranged for, you guessed it, a VERY GOOD LOOKING paramedic dressed in full gear, to come in to see Jackie. The stage for this couldn’t have been better; she was at the front of the room before everyone when he stepped up behind her, and the look on her face was priceless when she turned to see him there!
-HEADS OR TAILS. Taryn you truly rocked! They loved ‘ya and I do to! Thanks heaps!
-EGG ROLLS. What could egg rolls have to do with Paper Arts A Thon? Pam (who owns the Bead Store) and her husband Charlie arrived sometime after midnight with a huge bag of hot egg rolls for EVERYONE! I tell you the truth when I say; they were the BEST egg rolls I have ever eaten. The look on everyone’s faces was pure heaven. Terry just could not believe that ANYONE would show up in the middle of night like that with EGGROLLS!
-Just as I DREAMED, there sat Karen and the gals from New Brunswick. Karen sharing stamps and ideas with Jill. Amy scrapping beside them. Angie nearby making everyone laugh. Michelle making new friends. Josee and the gang keeping the creative juices going. Debbie always nearby with hugs. Gayle wired but present. Kathryn pulling it together at the last minute so she could share the experience with us. The Two Much Girls, Melissa, so glad you could make it, Ria, Paulette and Alex. Holly’s friends Gail and Millie. Always there for you, Kaye and her friend Cathy. The J J’s, Jenny-Jane and Jocelyn, along with a couple of P’s (Pam and Pam) not to be forgotten Heather (after all she is the one to have called me the Karaoke ----). Bea, so very talented Bea, sharing a table with Alice, Jaime and Elaine (half marathoners). Newfound friends and kindred spirits, Margaret, Trina, Angie and Iris.
As the wee hours rolled in we decided it best (for safety reasons) to do the final draws and make our closing remarks early. We were all worried about the Wonderful Women (Sandra, Linda, Angie, Roberta, Nancy, Pam, Joy and Karen) making the long drive home to NB. The final total, after proceeds from the Silent Auction, Make N Takes and Draws was added up, came to over $9600.00. Unbelievable in some ways but when I think of the generosity, love and spirit in the Kingston Fire Hall on the 26th and 27th of May I am not surprised!
Even before the 26th of May I was describing Paper Arts A Thon as one of the best experiences of my life! I can never fully explain what ‘happened’ on the 26th and 27th of May but I feel in many ways that we (Holly, Jackie, Bonnie and myself) were merely a vessel for all good things to come to Paper Arts A Thon. THANK YOU again, Holly, for giving me the opportunity to take part in a LIFE CHANGING experience!

If you are attending you will have received one final (I think that is it) email from Jackie. I look forward to seeing you at the Kingston Fire Hall on Saturday, May 26th. Five More Days!

Only FIVE more days, I can’t believe how time has flown by. We are pretty much prepared for Paper Arts A Thon although last minute ideas keep popping up in our heads to add some finishing touches. By now, if you are attending, you have received three emails from Jackie, the last one with a checklist with ‘Things To Bring’.

You will all be working on your own projects and I am excited to see what ‘Creations’ will come from our 24 hours together. I know some of you have decided to make ‘Cards For Our Troops’ and there will be a place to deposit those. I will match each card with an envelope, as my donation to this worthy cause.

Donations keep coming in and at the end of this week I will post the remainder of them. There will be a poster at Paper Arts A Thon with the long list of people/ businesses who have made this possible.

So until Saturday, do get plenty of rest. Pack your bags as early as possible. This will allow you time to add those extra things you have forgotten. Drive safely to Paper Arts A Thon, we want you all there safe and sound.
If you are unable to attend but would like to stop in to say ‘Hello’, please feel free to do so. We are at the Kingston Fire Hall on Sparky Street in Kingston.
See you on the 26th May, our 1st Paper Arts A Thon!

Ways To Fundraise

Paper Arts A Thon is a Fundraiser for ‘Joints in Motion’ and the Arthritis Society. Every participant has received a pledge sheet. I have had a few Paper Artists tell me that canvassing for pledges just isn’t easy for them to do.

I wanted to share with you some of the ‘creative’ alternatives they have come up with to raise money for ‘Joints in Motion’ and the ‘Arthritis Society’.

One Paper Artist is making handmade items and selling them. You may know her as Paper Memories and as she posted on her blog a while ago, she has raised $150. (Check out her Countdown to Paper Arts A Thon)

Another Paper Artist starting tucking ONE DOLLAR A DAY away, when this event was first announced.

Another ‘inventive’ and ‘ecological’ way to raise $$$’s is to turn in your recyclables and donate the dollars through your pledge sheet.

I had someone else tell me that canvassing for Pledges just isn’t for them and they are donating out of their own pocket what they might consider a ‘Registration Fee’ since there is no such fee to attend Paper Arts A Thon.

All great ideas! And all for a worthy cause! If you would like to share your ideas please post to the comments page.

See you on the 26th,
Happy Stamper
